Losing Weight as a Family

To have long-term success losing weight, you need the support from people around you. It’s not something that is accomplished on your own, but with a network of family and friends (and sometimes strangers) that are willing and able to help you.

The help from family is especially important, because of the drastic lifestyle change many of us encounter when trying to lose weight. And, most importantly, it’s perfectly reasonable and often times necessary to ask your love ones to take the healthy lifestyle commitment with you.

Here are some tips to make your healthy lifestyle a family affair:

  1. Tell friends and family you’re losing weight. You need them to be your coaches, cheering you on as you continue to make good choices and lose weight. Tell them that you’d appreciate a show of encouragement every once in a while. Let them know that you need their support.
  2. Just like marriage counselors suggest keeping technology out of the bedroom, designate certain areas of your house to be off limits of food. You need to have a place in your house where you can go when you are tempted to break your diet.
  3. Clean out your kitchen and make one cupboard strictly for yourself. This is where all healthy food goes and nobody else is allowed to put food there. You should know at anytime when you feel hungry, you can open up the cupboard and get anything you want out of it.
  4. Put a dollar in a jar somewhere for every pound you lose. Come together as a family and set a certain amount – when you reach it, treat yourself to something good. For example, if the entire family loses 50 pounds ($50), you can all go out and eat pizza and bowl at the local alley.
  5. For those that don’t have other family members or friends on the same diet, ask those that you eat with regularly to not offer foods that aren’t on your diet plan. This doesn’t mean they can’t eat the foods that are tempting; they just shouldn’t offer you any.

Finally, share your successes with everyone you know. When you hit a certain goal that you set, be sure to tell everyone. By spreading the great news, they’ll see how enthusiastic and excited you are about your diet and are likely to only support you more. Even better, some may be inclined to join you on your journey for a healthy lifestyle.
